The fundamental idea is that if you can clear up some of the underlying problems
internally, then therapy/ language/ cognition/ behavior will progress at an
amazingly rapid rate.

Different things have worked for different kids.
- For some it was as simple as just being on a GFCF diet or a particular drug to
take them out of the spectrum or close to the border so that minimal therapy
could get them out in no time. For Victoria Beck’s kid, the solution was
secretin. For another it was Vitamin A. For others nothing has worked.
- It is each parents choice to decide as to whether to pursue the diet/medical
option.

Vitamin B6, taken with magnesium, is also being explored as a way to
stimulate brain activity. Because vitamin B6 plays an important role in creating
enzymes needed by the brain, some experts predict that large doses might foster
greater brain activity in people with autism. However, clinical studies of the
vitamin have been inconclusive and further study is needed.
Like drugs, vitamins change the balance of chemicals in the body and may
cause unwanted side effects. For this reason, large doses of vitamins should
only be given under the supervision of a doctor. This is true of all vitamins
and medications.

Not all treatments are covered by standard health insurance as they are not
“proven”. For alternative treatments you need to go to a DAN (Defeat Autism Now)
doc – can get a list of DAN Docs on the www.autism.com website.
- Many times the neurologist or pediatric psychiatric or equivalent can prescribe some
of the drugs & these will be covered by insurance.
- Some things like speech & OT services may be covered by some insurances.
