Dealing with the Diagnosis.

- Some starting points to consider

An Autism diagnosis (DSM-IV criteria) is very devastating for any parent. It turns your world totally upside down, adds a lot of stress to your life and it takes a long time for any parent to come to terms with it. However while you are learning to cope with it:
  • Do not take your child's problem lightly. If you don't make the effort, no one else is as vested in your child.
  • The problems may compound, as your child grows older so it’s better to address them when they are young. Every time your child does something inappropriate think of what it would look like him/her doing the same thing in public when he/she is 20 yrs old – that should stop any procrastination.
  • It does not matter if your kid is diagnosed with  PDD or Aspergers or Autism  (whatever severity). All of them need heavy intensive intervention.
  • Do not assume the problem will go away coz when the child is older.

For parents of Older Kids

  • Don't give up. It is said that the window of opportunity is greatest for kids with Autism when they are very young. However the human mind is a amazing thing, so keep working with your child - you will see improvement at any age.
  • The most important thing is not to get discouraged by what professionals or the school districts say.  There is this wonderful story about a frog I read sometime back. All the frogs were climbing a tower and the crowd down below kept telling the frogs that they would never make it to the top. All the frogs dropped out one by one except for one who did make it to the top. It turns out that he was deaf - he never got discouraged by the crowd and so kept going.

The Next Step

  • An informed parent is an effective parent. Research, network & find out what has worked for other parents.
