Following are some of the recreational activities that are designed for special need kids by organizations that conduct them:

Respite:

Office Of Therapeutic Services (OTS), San Jose provides parents date night once a month where you can drop off your special need kid and their siblings and go out for an evening out. Contact Dan Greely at 408-251-4449

Aspira provides 'wrap-around services' combining respite and behavioral program. Needs to be used as a package: respite-alone service is not available. Typically contracted thru SARC (San Andreas Regional Center); you can use your SARC respite entitlement to pay for this. Contact Yvette at 408-445 3855

CAR

(Community Association for Rehabilitation) in Palo Alto. Also referred to as Home companions. They have professionals who come to your home to take care of your child, or take the child out. Typically contracted thru SARC; you can use your SARC respite entitlement to pay for this. It is best to set up respite as a regular schedule; one-off requests can be negotiated with individual provider. Contact Betty Kincade at 650-812-2817.

In addition to respite services, CAR also provides Infant Development, Creative Recreation for School Age Children, CAR Milestones Preschool, the LEARN Adult Day Program, Employment Services, Independent Living Skills as well as the Betty Wright Swim Center which is a warm water therapeutic pool. Gymnastics:

Airborne Gymnastics at Martin Ave, Santa Clara (close to Walsh/San Tomas). They do not have any reserved groups for special-needs children. However, a free class (20 to 30 minutes) is available to see if the child shows interest. Lessons are given in groups. However, a small extra payment allows the instructor to spend part of the lesson time one-on-one with the child. Phone 408-986 8226

Twisters' Gym at Terminal Boulevard, Mountain View. They have several gym programs for boys and girls. No info available reg. special-needs children. Phone 650-967 5581

City of Cupertino Parks & Recreation dept holds basic gymnastics skills programs for special-needs children ages 5-12. Conducted at the Monta Vista Recreation Club at 22601, Voss (at Foothill Blvd). The program is once a week for 1 hour. Fees: $64 if you live in Cupertino; $70 otherwise. Phone 408-777 3120

Swimming:

Easter Seals Society offers therapeutic aquatics programs. These are held at the Timpany Center on Empey Way, San Jose in an indoor pool with the water kept at relatively warm temperature (approx 90 degrees). The programs are about 8 weeks long, and the child gets one-on-one attention with an instructor during each 25-minute session. The child can participate one day a week, or two days a week. Needs medical clearance form signed by pediatrician. Contact Easter Seals at 408-295 0228

CAR (Community Association for Rehabilitation) in Palo Alto. The Betty Wright Swim Center @ CAR is a warm water therapeutic pool for people with and without disabilities. Adapted Aquatics and Learn to Swim classes are available as well as water exercise, therapy, and general swim. Contact the pool at 650-494-1480.

Ice-skating:

Downtown Ice, San Jose This is at Market and Viola Streets. Open November thru January. It is an open-air skating rink. Admission for 90-minute session is $7 with extra $3 for skate rental. Skate rental is free for kids 8 and under. No information is available regarding instructors. Phone 408-287 6423

Ice Chalet skating school, Cupertino This is inside the Valco Mall on Wolfe Road and Stevens Creek. General admission for a 90-minute session is $6.50 with $3 extra for skate rental. Instructors and regular lessons are available. For a 13-week class (one half-an-hour session per week), the cost is approx $140 incl. skate rentals. Classes are usually for a group, but one-on-one sessions can be arranged with instructors. Phone 408-446 2906

Music therapy:

Absolute Vibrations, San Francisco They also conduct one-on-one music therapy sessions at a San Jose location, which is on San Tomas and Hamilton Avenue. Sessions are typically 1 hour. Charges are approx $65 for 1 hour. Contact Brian at 415-820 3900.

Dance Classes:

GRACE DANCE Center is pleased to announce a new dance program designed for children with special needs.
The program is designed to develop body awareness and motor skills, explore rythmic activities and creative movement,increase self-esteem, and encourage self-expression in a positive ,safe, and nurturing environment.
Classes may be groups according to cognitive levels and motor skills

Camps:

Office of Therapeutic Services (OTS), City of San Jose conducts play camps from time to time, mostly during school holidays. For example, there was a 3-day 10AM-2PM winter play camp during the Christmas break, 2000. Contact Dan Greeley at 408-251-4449

Camp Costanoan (part of Via Rehabilitation Services) conducts weekend camps during school year and multiple-day residential camps during summer. Complete facility includes a variety of activities: horse riding, swimming, hiking, arts & crafts etc. For winter camps, registration is during October; for summer camps registration is in February. Ages 5 thru 18. Having a SARC respite approval will help; probably is a pre-requisite. Phone 408-243 7861

Other programs:

Special Olympics organized by Santa Clara County. Available for children age 8 and above. Year-round programs help child do well in specific events: basketball, for example. Participation is free, if you live in Santa Clara County. Phone 408-267 2734

Kinderfun activity from Jan 2001 for 8 weeks; Saturdays 10:30AM to 1:30PM, costs approx $40. Call 408-369-3900

Sunnyvale City, Parks & Recreation offer therapeutic recreation. Usually for seniors, but could have programs for children too (not confirmed). Phone 408-730 7359

Organization For Special Need Familes offer Soccer programs for special need kids. They also offer Integrated Afterschool Enrichment program, Integrated Paly and Social Group, Integrated Child Care development, (funded by first five), OSF enrichment summer camps.
