The therapies on this page do not work for everyone and JEENA does not endorse or support any of them. This page is meant for information and education purposes only. The parents/caregivers are suggested to do their own research to know more about these therapies.

Accupressure

Accupressure is a science that deals with the human body and the flow of natural energy within the body. It is a science, and there is nothing supernatural or magical about acupressure. This medical science is practiced with the use of only one human tool: the thumb. Pressure is applied on different 'pressure points' on the body, stimulating the corresponding glands of the body.

Acupressure is a way of accessing and releasing blocked or congested energy centers in the body. These energy centers, or Accupoints, lie on energy pathways called Meridians. When Accupoints or Meridians become blocked or congested, we experience pain or discomfort on a physical level. On an emotional level, we may become frustrated or irritable, and on a spirit (energetic) level, we may feel ungrounded, vulnerable, and have difficulty knowing our true purpose in life. By using deep but gentle finger pressure on specific Accupoints, the blocked energy starts to release, allowing your body/mind to relax. As your body/mind relaxes, physical discomfort eases, creating an opportunity to explore thought patterns, memories and belief systems. Through mindful exploration, the way you experience your universe can change. This will offer you an opportunity to manifest your purpose in life with less discomfort and stress and with a greater sense of well-being.

Accupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient oriental healing art in which a doctor places needles in various points on the body surface. These needles are placed along 'energy meridians' and help to break up energy blockages so that a healthy flow of energy may resume. Chinese medicine holds that interruptions in the body's energy flow cause a myriad of ailments, particularly if they are not addressed for long periods of time. By releasing energy blockages which are congesting certain joints or organs, relief is achieved. By the same token, resuming energy supplies to organs which were being deprived allows overall health to be regained.

Adeli Suit

The Adeli suit, designed by the Russian space program for cosmonauts to maintain muscle tone in a weightless environment, it's been modified to help people with cerebral palsy.

How it works: The form-fitting suit, equipped with adjustable, elastic bands, is designed to put the body in proper alignment. "It's an interesting concept" says Dr. Edward Dabrowski, codirector of neurology and rehabilitation medicine at Children's Hospital of Michigan. "I affectionately call it a bungee cord suit. If a child has cerebral palsy and doesn't have motor control, it acts as a restriction of where that limb will go." Patients are then put through vigorous physical therapy to help "re-train" the brain to understand the signals from the correct movements of muscles.

Aminoacid Therapy

Metabolic Amino Acid Therapy now used extensively in Russia, is a method of treating brain damage and brain abnormality developed by Professor Alexander Khokhtov, a Russian Professor of biochemistry and neurology .

The approach encourages the poorly functioning brain to switch permanently to reserve cells which have the potential to function normally specific amino acids detected by Professor Khokhlov during his 30 years research in Russia can help these reserve nerve cells to take over the function of the abnormal or dead cells. The amino combinations have been developed in such a way that on ingestion the active ingredients pass through the liver without being destroyed. They then replenish the hurt brain's need for amino acids naturally so making up the deficiency. This strengthens the system so that the brain's spontaneous demand for amino acids and the natural manufacture of amino acids in the body also increases. The approach is absolutely harmless since the amino acids preparations are the same as those present in all organ tissues. The deficiency occurs because of abnormal cerebral metabolism which can be caused by brain swelling because of injury or by abnormal brain structure, as in, for example, Downs Syndrome Restoring amino acid metabolism helps to normalize the brain's growth and function.

Auditory Integration Training

Auditory Integration Training was designed to normalize hearing and the way the brain processes information. Invented by Guy Berard, M.D., French ENT specialist, to rehabilitate disorders of the auditory system, it utilizes an electronic amplifier with variable frequency and amplitude modulation capabilities. What is produced is very gentle holistic music that is listened to over headphones twice a day for ten days. Each session is 30-minutes. A summary of various case histories with samples of hearing screenings before and after AIT can be found in Dr. Berard's book, Hearing Equals Behavior, published by Keats.

In his research, Dr. Berard discovered that many of those suffering from some forms of neurological disorders have very sensitive or bionic hearing. Often misdiagnosed as autistic, he soon realized that many learning disabled are trapped in a world of hypersensitivity to sound, confusing brain stimuli, and frequency imbalances between the right and left ear. His research proved that exercising the middle ear mechanism through the use of modulated and filtered music usually produces reversals in patients suffering from a wide variety of learning and speaking problems.

Two other books about AIT are recommended: The Sound of a Miracle, by Annabel Stehli. This riveting account of her daughter's complete recovery from autism at age 11 after being treated by Dr. Berard, was serialized in The Reader's Digest in 1990 and was responsible for bringing AIT to this country. Dancing in the Rain, "Stories of Exceptional Progress by Parents of Children with Special Needs," edited by Annabel Stehli, is a book about children with many different exceptionalities who were helped by AIT. You will probably find your child in this book. All books are available from amazon.com.

Cranial Sacral Therapy:

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called the CranioSacral system.

The CranioSacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid which form the fluid-filled sac around the core of the nervous system - surrounding, nourishing, and protecting the brain and spinal cord. Like the pulse of the cardiovascular system, the CranioSacral system has a rhythm that can be felt throughout the body.

Using a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a small coin, skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm at key body areas to pinpoint the source of an obstruction or stress. Once a source has been determined, they can assist the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct. This simple action is often all it takes to remove a restriction. Other times, CST may be combined with other complementary therapies to help restore the body to it's optimum functioning level.

It's far-reaching effects enable CranioSacral Therapy to be useful for a wide scope of health problems, including Headache, Migraine ,Irritable Bowel Syndrome ,Digestive problems Chronic back pain, Depression , Strokes , Brain and spinal cord injuries, Problems of the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system , Multiple Sclerosis ,M.E. , Menstrual problems , Menopausal problems, Arthritis (osteo & rheumatoid) , TMJ dysfunction (jaw problems) , Chronic Pain Syndrome , Post-operative adhesions , Dyslexia and Dyscalclia , Allergies Neuralgia Sinusitis , Tinnitus , Vertigo , High & low blood pressure .

EEG Bio feedback

EEG Biofeedback is a learning strategy that enables persons to alter their brain waves. When information about a person's own brain wave characteristics is made available to him, he can learn to change them. You can think of it as exercise for the brain.

EEG Biofeedback is used for many conditions and disabilities in which the brain is not working as well as it might. These include Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and more severe conduct problems, specific learning disabilities, and related issues such as sleep problems in children, teeth grinding, and chronic pain such as frequent headaches or stomach pain, or pediatric migraines.

The training is also helpful with the control of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as for more severe conditions such as medically uncontrolled seizures, minor traumatic brain injury, or cerebral palsy

Felden Krais

The Feldenkrais Method, a unique approach to movement reeducation, focuses on how movement is organized by the neuromuscular system. The Method teaches better use of your entire body, and reduces unnecessary stress and strain, so you move with greater ease, comfort, and coordination. Practitioners consider it useful for many types of chronic pain, including headache, temporomandibular joint disorder, other joint disorders, and neck, shoulder, and back pain. It is sometimes used as supportive therapy for people with neuromuscular disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and stroke. It's also helpful for improving balance, coordination, and mobility. Many athletes, dancers, and other performers use the Feldenkrais Method as part of their overall conditioning.

Functional Integration!R (FI), the hands-on application, uses skilled, gentle touch to facilitate learning and change. FI focuses on individual movement habits and introduces alternative patterns, so you move beyond accepted limitations and experience a new sense of freedom and pleasure in everyday activities. FI is internationally recognized for its broad applications and immediate results.

G-therapy:

G Therapy is a pioneering treatment for a variety of Neuro-developmental disabilities like Cerebral Palsy, Mental Subnormality, etc. Invented by Dr. Gunvant Oswal, an integrated practitioner in Ayurveda and Allopathy, the treatment involves intake of a special combination of herbal extracts in potentised form and salts of body. Today management of such patients mainly depends upon assistive technology - speech therapy, behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, symptomatic drug therapy for convulsions, involuntary movements etc. and surgery for corrective measures. So far there is no drug therapy available to improve motor functions and higher cortical functions of the brain. G Therapy has shown significant improvements in these conditions in about 70% of patients. G. Therapy is a unique combination of herbal extracts in potentised form and body salts. This formulation has shown beneficial effects on motor and higher cortical functions of the brain. The body salts bring about the necessary changes in neuro transmission while the herbal extracts act as a catalyst. Conceived by Dr. Gunvant Oswal, on the basic principals of pharmacology of Ayurveda and Sookshmachikitsa, the formulation is in the form of sweet pills, has sublingual absorption, is safe and compatible with conventional therapies like Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, anti convulsant medicines, etc.

Horse Riding Therapy (Hippo therapy)

The term of "hippotherapy" from the Greek word "hippos" for horse, literally means treatment with the help of the horse. Hippotherapy has been used as a form of treatment in Europe for more than 30 years and it continues to grow in popularity as the therapeutic value of the horse is recognized throughout the medical community. In hippotherapy, the horse influences the patient, rather than the patient influencing the horse. The patient works with a specially trained occupational, physical, or speech therapist, who uses the horse as a mobile therapeutic tool. The action of the horse, coupled with traditional therapy, influences muscle tone, mobilizes joints, activates muscle action, increases sensorimotor integration, and improves balance and midline control. The three-dimensional, repetitive movement of the horse, combined with the unique environment surrounding the horse, makes it a tool unmatched by traditional therapeutic tools.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBO):

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is an A.M.A. recognized medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. It is simply intermittent, short-term, high dose oxygen inhalation therapy. It is used for a wide variety of treatments usually as part of an overall medical care plan. The oxygen level in the patient's blood-stream is raised many times above normal, which helps control infections and promote healing in many kinds of illness or injury.

Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBO, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support its own healing process. The increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria, reduces local swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. It is a simple, non-invasive and painless treatment.

It has long been known that healing many areas of the body cannot take place without appropriate oxygen levels in the tissue. Most illness and injuries occur and often linger at the cellular or tissue level. In many cases, such as in circulatory problems, in non-healing wounds and in strokes, adequate oxygen cannot reach the damaged area and the body's natural healing ability is unable to function properly. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can provide this extra oxygen naturally with minimal side effects. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an FDA and Medicare approved method of treatment for many illnesses. Medicare, Blue Shield, and Blue Cross now recognize at least 13 different diseases for which HBOT is recommended as either primary or secondary treatment. Many private insurance companies do pay for HBOT.

Kinesiotaping

Kinesio Taping is a technique based on the body's own natural healing process. This Kinesio Taping exhibits its efficacy through the activation of neurological and circulatory systems. This method basically stems from the science of Kinesiology. Hence the name "Kinesio" is used. Muscles are not only attributed to the movements of the body but also control the circulation of venous and lymph flows, body temperature, etc. Therefore, the failure of the muscles to function properly induces various kinds of symptoms. Consequently, so much attention was given to the importance of muscle function that the idea of treating the muscles in order to activate the body's own healing process came about. Using an elastic tape, it was discovered that muscles and other tissues could be helped by outside assistance. Employment of Kinesio Taping creates a totally new approach to treating nerves, muscles, and organs.

Magnetic Therapy (Magnetic Molecular Energizing Method)

MME is a treatment method that consists of the application of high (3000 to 5000 gauss) direct current fields. An MME device consists of two very large and strong electromagnets with the patient lying in a focal point between the two electromagnets. The human body is electromagnetic being composed largely of charged particles such as atoms, electrons, protons and ions (e.g., potassium, sodium, etc,). These all perform vital life functions. When a patient is placed in the MME device there is a temporary increase in the magnetic force on the atoms composing the cells of his/her body in the area of the MME focal point. The force results in a higher velocity of some of the orbiting electrons. This Increase in velocity of some electrons and not others causes precession or wobble of the atom. When combined with the higher velocity this leads to enhanced electron transfer. Electron transfer is the basic action of all chemical reactions of the body. So, the magnetic field of the MME device acts as a catalyst to improve chemical reactions occurring in the human body. This improves a variety of body functions in the area of the MME focal point, such as oxygen carrying capacity, assimilation of nutrients, manufacture of enzymes, metabolic waste removal, reduction of free radicals, tissue regeneration and most importantly healing. The rate of healing can be accelerated to be much faster than the typical healing rate of the human body. For example a bone fracture that typical requires 6.8 weeks to heal may require only a few days with MME treatment.

Rolfing

Rolfing is the name given to the system of body manipulation originated by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, PhD in biochemistry. Dr. Rolf had a child who had a health problem, and searched for a way, outside of conventional medicine, to solve it. She went to work on the child with her hands and with a good measure of success, discovered that she could restore the child's body to a more balanced shape and alignment, ease of movement, by working with the connective tissue in the body. This evolved  then, into working on friends, and friends of friends, until she had quite a reputation for being able to "fix" things for people in their bodies. Rolfing is a way of working with the fascia that balances the body in gravity. In its most simply expressed form, Rolfers work with the body as a system of inter-related segments to restore these segments to proper alignment in the vertical and horizontal grid of gravity. Thus for example, the Rolfer will determine the shift and tilt of the pelvis and its relationship to each leg in order to bring them into better vertical and horizontal balance with each other, while working with all other body segments, so that further balance, rather than strain, is induced through the whole body.

Vojta Therapy

In the years fifty, in Czechoslovakia, Vaclāv Vojta, a  neurologist concerned by the motor rehabilitation, began the long way from the first empirical attempts to the current therapeutic concept. This evolution has continued in Germany where V. Vojta had emigrated in1968. From Munich, an international system of collaboration and formation has gradually developed in Europe and in the whole world. The research committed by the Professor V. Vojta has always comprised two simultaneous ways. The neurological investigation, led to the elaboration of an evaluation methodology of the child development, of its dynamics, and its main disorders. V. Vojta has always considered the nervous system as an open system, endowed with a basic, phylogenetic organization, but also with a receptivity to various stimulations able to affect its functioning and even to have an effect on its anatomical maturation. The " reflex locomotion" gives physically shape to the conjugation of these two complementary aspects, it constitutes the axis major of an original therapeutic protocol that has first intended to the children with Cerebral palsy ( CP). In the course of years, the constant refinement of the observation and the theoretical reasoning, based on the practical experience of an increasing and dynamic team, operating in multiple sectors of activity, has contributed to a considerable widening of the indication field : peripheral or central neurological disorders of the child from the neonatal stage up to the adult, and a majority of disorders concerning the loco-motor anatomical system.

The "Vojta Method" is for the physician a precious clinic tool for the evaluation of the child development from birth, and a reliable element of diagnosis. It is for the physiotherapist an efficient global therapy which can be used from the first days of life, in a preventive or curative intention. The treatment based on the reflex locomotion contributes to:

  •  Modify the reflex activity of the young child and to orient the neuro-motor development in a more physiological direction, by the induction of a different central neurological activity that supplies to the patient a new corporal perception. The muscular "proprioception" plays here a very important part.
  • Modify the spinal automatisms in lesions of the spinal cord .
  • Control the breathing in order to increase the vital capacity.
  • Control the neuro-vegetative reactions , and promote an harmonious growth of the loco-motor anatomical system .
  • Prevent the orthopedic degradation, frequent in severe pathological situations.

Watsu

Watsu, or Water Shiatsu, is a new form of physical and emotional therapy practiced in warm water, using elements of various massage and mobilization techniques. Watsu is a unique form of aquatic massage that is opening new horizons in the field of bodywork. The technique is taught by Harold Dull who is also director of the School of Shiatsu and Massage at Harbin Hot Springs. Dull coined the name from "water" and "shiatsu," the technique's two major components.

Watsu is provided at the Easter Seals Community Center in San Jose, California, one of the world's most progressive institutions dedicated to helping the disabled.

Three of the therapists at the center have written about the rehabilitative benefits of Watsu in Harold Dull's book, "Watsu, Freeing the Body in Water" [Harbin Springs Publishing, April 1993]. In the book, Sunny Mehler states, "At the Center, we see many people who are suffering from aches and pains of the body and/or mind. Our clientele varies greatly from young children with learning disabilites to older adults with chronic pain. For these clients, Watsu has been used either alone or in conjunction with physical therapy treatments with great success.

Jin Shin

Jin shin is an ancient healing art which uses simultaneous contact with specific points on the body to clear out energy blockages. The hands of the therapist act as jumper cables which clear out the blockage and allow the body to resume its own healthy energy flow. Unlike acupuncture, actual touch is not required. The therapist can hold their hands near the points needed and, merely by being in the proximity of the points, clear out the energy blockage. Jin Shin is noninvasive and has no negative side effects so long as it is not practiced more than once every eight hours. If it is practiced in excess of this, so much energy may be released that the client may actually develop flu like symptoms. Jin Shin is also unique in that it encourages independence. The client can easily learn to do basic flows on themselves which further enhance the treatments they receive from the therapist. Jin Shin has existed in the Far East for centuries but was brought to the United States by Mary Burmeister, an American who studied with a master in Japan for several years before returning to the U.S. The history of Jin Shin is so interesting, you may click here for a more thorough overview. There are several certified therapists throughout the world. You may search the internet for 'jin shin'. Look for anyone who practices jin shin jyutsu or high touch jin shin. Their practices are the same. The two names have evolved as part of the trade marking of different organizations.

Reiki

Reiki is the Japanese word for universal life energy:  Rei is the universal transcendental spirit or essence and ki is the vital life force energy. All living beings are born with this energy and transfer it from one another when laying the hands upon someone. This transference can assist in the healing process of the individual receiving it. With training in Reiki, an individual learns to enhance and focus the energy they are sending. The reiki master has learned to increase their energy to a higher vibrational level and to open their energy centers, also known as chakras, so that they can channel higher amounts of the life force energy. This treatment assists in maintaining health, overcoming disease, coping with stress, and enhancing overall well-being. Pain and acute conditions usually respond quite quickly while chronic conditions require more time to realign the being spiritually, emotionally, mentally, then physically. Reiki can be used to treat all living organisms, including plants. It dates back to Tibet in 500 b.c. but has gained momentum since the mid 1800s when a Japanese monk named Dr. Mikao Usni began teaching it.
